Item#: SAP-005, Physically Separated Interaction ("PSI")

Description: The designation SAP 005 refers to a series of related phenomena displayed by sophont individuals1. These phenomena manifest in various ways, primarily via human conduits. The use of SAP-005 will allow for anomalous events to occur when provoked by different psychological entities; almost exclusively the levitation of objects or the act of obtaining information without physical interaction of any kind2. Due to this, the term SAP-005 has become somewhat synonymous with the acronym PSI3 (physically separated interaction). It should be noted that the "internal" mechanisms and functional traits described in this document are only a series of trends. The phenomena known as SAP-005 generally refers to the observable anomalous traits or outcomes concerning the use of PSI abilities, while the latter term includes the more nebulous and poorly understood internal mechanisms of PSI interaction. Thus, SAP-005 displays external (observable) traits, while the use of PSI relies upon functional traits internal to the phenomena (closed off from the physical world).
The main 3 categories of PSI abilities are: Manipulative, Acquisitive, and Transmissive. The PSI usage of these abilities may be referred to as "PSIMAT"4.
- Manipulative
- True psychokinesis5 is the ability to move physical objects with one's mind. Psychokinetics must have some sort of awareness of the target item in order to carry out operations. While the action of psychokinesis does not follow the rules of physics, the object being moved is still bound by physical limitations. This means that it is generally harder and more exhausting to control objects with high velocity, mass, and/or momentum. Additionally, objects with high air resistance require more exertion.
- Telepathic disruption is the ability to destabilize or alter telepathic messages. This ability has only been documented 3 times as of 1974.
- Acquisitive
- Psychic abilities are those in which the wielding individual is able to receive telepathic information. Most humans (98%) have the basic ability to receive telepathic data in the event that the information was transmitted to them.
- Gleaning refers to the ability to gain information without it being specifically directed to that individual. This allows data extraction from a subject's consciousness, even if they are not a telepath.
- "Yank" or "pull" psychokinesis occurs whenever an individual does not possess true psychokinesis. This differentiation profoundly affects one's psychokinetic abilities because they are only able to attract objects towards their body.
- Transmissive
- Telepathy refers to the broadcasting of PSI signals that contain encoded data. This data is most commonly messages or concepts, but in some rare cases, strong telepaths have been observed to emit signals that influence the behavior of other living things6.
- "Repelling" or "pushing" psychokinesis occurs whenever an individual does not possess true psychokinesis. The differentiation significantly affects one's psychokinetic abilities because they are only able to push objects away from their body.
While not a specific ability, the "piloting" of a subject may occur if the broadcasting telepath has the ability to alter behavior and also glean information from the subject's mind.
PSI is generally regulated by genetic traits, however, through training, an individual may hone their capabilities over time, making them more useful or possibly even altering their abilities. According to population-simulating projections, it is estimated that, by the year 2000 AD, around 34% of the world's population will possess weak latent capacity for analytically significant PSI7.
Aftermath Protocols: While it is not possible to regulate all instances of SAP-005, the Repository is to constantly keep tabs on active PSI users. All infants born in a country with sufficient infrastructure are to be tested for strong SAP-005 abilities via blood analysis. While these tests are crude and only partially reliable, they are usually able to detect individuals with PSI powers that may develop to be highly disruptive in modern society. Additionally, local authorities are to implement increased surveillance in large cities, which may in turn be monitored by the Repository to detect any previously undiscovered SAP-005 capable individuals.
Discovery: It is likely that PSI is as old as [DATA EXPUNGED]. It seems that modern social and cultural phenomena are the main catalyst for exposing SAP-005's existence to the public.
Addendum 1: In the late 1970s, the Repository began a program known as the Applied Psychokinesis Trials (APT). Using US infrastructure, they were able to locate several citizens capable of true psychokinesis. This has allowed the employment of various psychokinetic personnel. It has been proposed that these individuals could be used for special operations such as [REDACTED].
Addendum 2: The planet Earth is generally regarded as the only planet in the solar system to host native, sapient, biological life8. Thus, the planet is of great interest to researchers of PSI or consciousness in general. This has led to the classification of an additional terrestrial "sphere of influence". The baseline domains are that of the hydrosphere (all terrestrial water), the atmosphere (all terrestrial gas), the geosphere (all terrestrial rock, regardless of solidity), and the biosphere (all biological matter, regardless of origin). It is known within the anomalous community that other territories of classification do exist, such as the technosphere (all technological items, regardless of origin) or the electrosphere (all electrical interactions, especially those within the technosphere). SAP-005 and its associated phenomena have required the creation of yet another dominion: the psychosphere. Earth's psychosphere is considered to be comprised of all the local sophont and PSI-capable inhabitants, as well as their interactions. The domain can be broken down further into the lunar psychosphere (located on and around the moon) and the terrestrial psychosphere (located on and around the planetary body itself).
Is is suspected that other planets similar to Earth (in terms of possessing intelligent or PSI-capable specimens) may exhibit their own psychospheres. While this cannot be verified without travelling to other star systems, it can be inferred by interactions with extraterrestrial civilizations. The condition is also implied by various cultural artifacts recovered from various trans-universal societies.
Addendum 3: The psychosphere is considered to be depend on the physical world for its continued existence. Researchers generally classify PSI as an emergent phenomenon, being generated by physical structures, such as nervous tissue. However, some individuals hypothesize that the animate creatures present in the physical world instead derive their behaviors from thoughts that "trickle down" from the psychosphere into the material universe. Ideas and concepts promoted by PSI interaction are not thought to possess the ability to exist independent of living beings. However, not all PSI phenomena do not necessarily occur in direct contact with physical matter: instead, they may exist purely in the psychosphere. Note that these "higher" PSI systems must still connect to the physical world in some way, either "tethered" via intermediate PSI interactions, or "stacked" upon other layers of thought.
The discovery (or more accurately, the description) of these PSI-dependent interactions present within the "upper" psychosphere prompted additional research, and yielded a series of discoveries that necessitated additional classification of PSI interaction and the resulting relationships.
The aforementioned revelations unveiled the internal hierarchy of psychospheric order. Just as basic PSI communication methods rely upon material structures to exist, secondary PSI instances may depend on the original phenomena at play. These "second degree PSI" patterns can exhibit identifiable trends, such as bearing a remarkable resemblance to "first degree PSI". Thus, the emerging PSI structures were cataloged as Physically Separated Intelligence Interaction (PSII). One of the earliest observation of PSII abilities was the documentation of telepathic messages exhibiting their own form of telepathy. SAP-022 projects lesser psyches from its location on the far side of the moon. This projection creates "phantoms", typically originating as psyches that were copied from human specimens. Whenever SAP-022 duplicates the consciousness of a human via psychic gleaning, this spectral copy will exhibit the traits of their original counterpart. Thus, phantom psyches created from PSI-capable humans are also PSI-capable, just as their "master copy" was. The discovery of this phenomena proved that telepathic constructs (the phantoms) can produce their own telepathy (by which they may communicate). Thus, the phenomenon of PSI interaction arising from other PSI interactions is thus referred to as PSII.

Upon closer inspection, it was found that the immediately observable existence of PSII could allow for even more PSI interactions to emerge from PSII, just as PSII emerges from PSI and PSI connects to the physical world. While this idea started as a purely theoretical hypothesis, it prompted more PSII research. By gathering and employing some of the world's most powerful psychic specimens, such as the human male known as Agent-Y, the Warnen Repository was able to conduct further experiments, which revealed that PSI and PSII were not simply a pair of linked phenomena, rather, there existed an entire chain of similar interaction "levels". This sequence of increasingly non-physical PSI "divisions" was termed Physically Separated Intelligence Interaction Iterations, or PSIII. Alternatively referred to as "third degree PSI", PSIII revealed a series of PSII-like partitioned sections, each building off the last. The extent of these psychospheric structures is unknown, and the expansion of such patterns could prove potentially infinite. This is, unfortunately, not possible to prove, largely because there would be no way to determine if the PSIII "levels" would "increase" in an unending fashion. It is also important to note that these "subdivisions" are not strictly considered inaccessible to humanity: the average human psychic (of relatively weak potency) can access up to 330 of these steps. A designation system was thus created. Each increment is denoted as a PSI "frequency" in the form PSIII-#, where the numerical component indicates how many "jumps" the psychospheric level is relative to the physical universe. One way to visualize PSI frequencies (alternatively PSIII or metaphysical frequencies) is that each leap from the material universe is a rung on a ladder. To achieve higher PSIII frequencies, one must "ascend" the ladder and interpret more telepathic interaction to understand the information present at that rung.

In fact, most human psychics regularly access frequencies up to around PSIII-15 without realizing their ascent. However, the farther one strays upwards from the baseline physical world, the more exertion is necessary to sustain their position. It is thus more difficult to access, and/or maintain one's position in, a higher PSIII frequency when compared to the ease of entry to the lower "levels". The rate at which one "hops" frequencies within the psychosphere determines the amount of information they are able to retain. Moving slowly between higher to lower PSIII frequencies allows better understanding and comprehension as one descends. The inverse is also true: a faster rate of change between PSIII frequencies can cause one to forget information acquired at higher levels on the ladder. The effects of changing these frequencies at any given pace are considered to be caused by the phenomenon of Physically Separated Interaction Vectors, or PSIVs. Faster PSIV activity may filter out information from higher PSIII frequencies, while slower transitions will enable increase understanding post-descent.
Lastly, there exists a poorly understood phenomenon that related to all forms of PSI that relies upon the same basic mechanisms. Inverse Physically Separated Interaction, or IPSI9, occurs whenever one's psyche descends the PSIII ladder. This requires a negative direction of PSIV travel, and instead of creating emergent behaviors via communications, IPSI deconstructs one's psyche via isolation. Essentially, the individual performing the IPSI action will dive into their own subconscious by utilizing their PSI abilities. This ability and its effects are poorly documented. Of the cases studied, successful IPSI users have reported reliving past experiences and the "fracturing" of their psyche, entering a fragmented condition that is later remedied by "climbing" back to their baseline state. It is not unheard of for these experiences to alter the subject's behavior, sometimes radically reconstructing habitual actions or even changing their core personality. Some researchers accredit this post-session discrepancy to potential errors in the reconstruction process, even attributing the changes to "alternate shard configurations" achieved during the consciousness reassembly process.
